Specialist children’s podiatry: from walking anomalies through to nail surgeries

The team at Medical Foot Care take a special interest in children’s podiatry. Comprehensive treatment can be provided for various conditions commonly displayed in young children such as flat feet, high arches, knock knees, pigeon toe walking, growing pains, warts, fungal infections and much more. Specialised insole therapy has also been developed by and exclusive to Medical Foot Care for the treatment of some of the before mentioned structural/biomechanical conditions. Dr Gerard Zammit has also developed a unique method to surgically treat ingrown toe nails in young children. The method attempts to minimise the amount of discomfort during local anaesthesia and ensures the child has a positive experience.

Laser therapy for fungal nails, soft tissue injuries, osteoarthritis and accelerates bone and wound healing

The most advanced Infra-red “K Laser” system is utilised at Medical Foot Care to provide pain-free and non-invasive treatment of conditions such as fungal nail infections (onychomycosis), muscular strains, tendinopathies, osteoarthritis, and to assist with accelerated bone and wound (ulcers) healing. Infra-red laser achieves its therapeutic effect by interacting with the body at a cellular level to increase blood flow and stimulate delivery of nutrients, oxygen and water to the treated area. This process results in an accelerated rate of healing and a significant reduction in pain enabling the patient to return to their regular daily activity as quickly as possible.

Focused and Radial Shock Wave Therapy for treatment of musculoskeletal injuries

Medial Foot Care utilises the more advanced Focus Shock Wave and general Radial Shock Wave therapies. Both systems are state of the art, and extremely high powered unlike many other alternatives. Shockwave therapy implements a pneumatic force to introduce high energy levels into structures such as muscle, bone and tendon to promote repair and regeneration. It can be used to treat both acute and chronic conditions by causing micro-ruptures to the treated structure which increases localised blood flow and promotes accelerated healing. Shockwave therapy can also be used in conjunction with other treatments to form part of a rehabilitation program to enable the patients return to activity as quickly as possible.

Lower limb strengthening and gait rehabilitation

Medical Foot Care assists in gait rehabilitation of the lower limbs via strengthening various muscle groups including the hips, legs and feet. A new and novel means of achieving this muscular conditioning is via Electrical Muscular Stimulation (EMS) using the state of the art COMPEX system. The principle of EMS is to reproduce the process involved in a voluntary contraction without the assistance of the patient. This results in significant increases in muscular strength and endurance for the treated muscle groups. This system is not to be confused with Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) which aims at producing an analgesic effect or pain relief.

Comprehensive Podiatry Care

  • Shockwave and Laser therapy

Medical Foot Care now utilises state of the art technology to treat an array of musculoskeletal conditions affecting the lower limbs. The rehabilitation clinic located at Altona North utilises both the focus and radial shockwave machines along with electrical muscular stimulation to treat conditions such as tendinopathies, insertional pain, trigger points and overuse injuries. Additionally, infra-red laser is also used to treat arthritis, soft tissue injuries, swelling and to assist with wound and bony healing.

  • Ingrown Toe Nails

The podiatrists at Medical Foot Care are highly skilled at managing ingrown nails. These treatments range from simple ongoing conservative care to more advanced long-term surgical solutions. Dr Gerard Zammit has developed an extremely comfortable and successful method to ensure the offending nail does not grow back. Patients as young as 10 years of age have benefitted from his help. The success of the procedure is guaranteed.

  • Children's Podiatry

Issues relating to the lower limb and feet may affect children and impair their mobility. It is therefore suggested to have them screened for any issues that may impact upon their physical ability earlier rather than later. This includes signs such as knock knees, flat feet, tripping, and pigeon toeing. Dr Gerard Zammit has a specific interest in paediatrics with two young children of his own. The aim of his treatment is to ensure that his young patients remain pain free, ensuring a high degree of mobility and physical activity.

  • Fungal Nails

Discolouration and thickening of the toe nails is a common problem caused by a fungal infection known as onychomycosis. Medical Foot Care uses the most up to date laser technology to successfully treat the nail disease. The treatment is pain free and displays excellent clinical outcomes. This treatment will restore your confidence with your foot health and appearance.

  • Lower Limb Sports Medicine

Investigation of the biomechanical parameters of foot function via gait analysis, muscular strength testing and range of motion assessment is conducted in order to identify any anomalies that may exist and contribute to the patients pain and reduction in performance. Our aim at Medical Foot Care is to get you moving as quickly and efficiently as possible.

  • Foot Orthoses (insoles)

Orthoses aim to correct biomechanical anomalies associated with foot function. The podiatrist will decide whether the patient would benefit from a prefabricated or a complete customised pair of insoles. Orthoses can be fabricated from materials of varying densities to suit the patients’ needs. Insole ultimately aims at enabling the patient to walk/run in a pain free efficient state

  • Foot and Ankle Pain

Diagnosis of lower limb disorders including tendon, ligament, and muscular strains, fractures and joint issues. Pathologies are confirmed via imagery such as x-ray and ultrasound with the most appropriate treatment plan formulated for each individual patient. Medical Foot Care aims at restoring pain free mobility and a return to activity as quickly as possible.

  • Diabetes Assessment

Diabetes assessments of the feet are undertaken to determine the patients foot health status. Doppler Ultrasound analysis is used to assess the vascular status of the patient’s feet and sensory testing is conducted to establish the lower limbs neurological status. Comprehensive diabetes education is also issued to the patient to further broaden their understanding of diabetes and its impact upon the feet.

  • General Foot Care

General foot care can be provided to those patients having difficulty self-treating for their feet. This typically includes caring for patients displaying long and thick nails, painful corns and calluses, plantar warts, foot odour, blisters, fungal skin infections, cracked heels and fungal nail infections. The podiatrists at Medical Foot Care are always happy to help with addressing any concerns relating to the lower limbs and feet.
